Resources

The courses give you a path. These resources let you go further, at your own pace, or check a point when you need to. They are all worth your time, whatever your level.
The reference texts
When a question needs an exact answer, go back to the source.
- RAWeb 1.1, the Luxembourg web accessibility framework, published by the Information and Press Service (SIP). It is the framework the auditing courses follow.
- Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, the W3C recommendation that RAWeb and the European standard EN 301 549 build on.
- ARIA Authoring Practices Guide, from the W3C: how to build common components (menus, tabs, dialogs…) so that assistive technologies understand them.
Websites to learn from
- W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI): introductions, tutorials and guidance, from the people who write the standards.
- MDN Web Docs: Accessibility: clear explanations of HTML, CSS and ARIA, with examples.
- WebAIM: articles, tools and surveys on accessibility, including how people use screen readers.
- The A11Y Project: a community resource with a checklist, articles and patterns.
My books
I wrote two books on topics these courses build on.
- What Designers Need to Know About Accessibility, by Geoffrey Crofte (2024). Accessibility for designers, beyond the rules of WCAG: concrete advice and real examples to design inclusive products.
- Web Forms: Costly Mistakes You Want to Avoid, by Geoffrey Crofte (2024). Where usability, accessibility and performance meet in web forms, and the mistakes that cost users and conversions.
Books by others
- Accessibility for Everyone, by Laura Kalbag (A Book Apart, 2017). A short, friendly first book: disabilities, laws and guidelines, planning and testing.
- A Web for Everyone, by Sarah Horton and Whitney Quesenbery (Rosenfeld Media, 2014). Accessibility as a way to design user experiences, not a checklist.
- Inclusive Design Patterns, by Heydon Pickering (Smashing Magazine, 2016). How to build accessible interfaces, pattern by pattern.
- Inclusive Components, by Heydon Pickering (Smashing Magazine, 2019). Twelve everyday components, from toggles to tabs, made robust and accessible.
- Form Design Patterns, by Adam Silver (Smashing Magazine, 2018). Real forms, from a login to a long application, designed so everyone can complete them.
- Mismatch: How Inclusion Shapes Design, by Kat Holmes (MIT Press, 2018). Why design excludes people, and how inclusion makes it better for everyone.
